As part of its 60th anniversary celebration, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Ibadan (UI) inducted 90 veterinary graduates into the profession. The induction ceremony, held in collaboration with the Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN), took place in the faculty auditorium under the theme “60 Years of Veterinary Education: The Goals, the Gains, and the Gaps.”
Dr. Adebanji Adeniyi, the induction lecturer and award recipient, emphasized the need for professionalism and ethical conduct in veterinary medical practice. Professor Basil Ikede, a member of the faculty’s first graduating class in 1967, congratulated the faculty on its achievements in training veterinarians who contribute to research and education both in Nigeria and globally. He encouraged the new inductees to carry the title “Doctor” with pride and humility as they begin their careers.
Professor Olufunke Ola-Davies, Dean of the Faculty, urged the graduates to uphold the values of their profession and serve as exemplary ambassadors. She reflected on the progress made under her leadership, noting that the faculty had obtained full accreditation from the National University Commission (NUC) shortly after she assumed office, having previously operated under interim accreditation.
Ola-Davies highlighted key achievements, including the establishment of the faculty’s Alumni Association and significant staff promotions—five Readers, six Senior Lecturers, and fifteen Professors. She also underscored infrastructural improvements, such as the completion of the Virology and Parasitology Laboratory, renovations of key faculty buildings, and the installation of modern equipment, including six binocular microscopes, a digital X-ray machine, and a 45 kVA Mikano generator to support the faculty’s operations.
As part of the five-day celebration, the faculty offered free anti-rabies vaccinations for dogs at two centers and provided free health services, including eye exams, blood pressure monitoring, and blood sugar checks for members of the public.
