The partnership between the Federal Government of Nigeria, Oyo State, and the French Government has produced significant outcomes through the Women in Agricultural Technical Education and Apprenticeship in Nigeria (WATEA) project. This initiative aims to train 3,000 women in agricultural skills, with the Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora, selected as one of six institutions for the project.
French experts and the WATEA coordinator from the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) recently visited the institution to assess its readiness to train 500 women in poultry, fishery, and cassava value chains. Dr. William Gex from the French Department of Agricultural Education emphasized the project’s goal of equipping young women with skills aligned with the needs of SMEs in the agri-food sector, promoting sustainable careers in agriculture.
Dr. Darracq Sonia from the French Embassy highlighted the project’s objective of fostering partnerships between the private sector and educational institutions across six Nigerian states. The Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology’s collaboration with industries was particularly praised.
Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Olasunkanmi Olaleye, and the Rector, Professor Akinola Akinlabi, both expressed gratitude and support for the project. Professor Akinlabi mentioned that the initiative would introduce innovative farming techniques and sustainable business models, enhancing the perception and growth of Nigeria’s agricultural sector. Additionally, two staff members were sponsored to study agribusiness in France, and the project includes opportunities for student exchange programs with France.
