The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) is set to resume livestock transportation from the northern to southern regions of the country via the Warri-Itakpe route, a service suspended in 2017 due to technical issues.
During a TV appearance on Wednesday, NRC Managing Director Fidet Okhiria announced efforts to modernize livestock and goods transport, emphasizing rail’s role in complementing road transport to the south-south Warri area.
President Bola Tinubu recently suggested creating a Ministry of Livestock Development, highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing the livestock sector. Okhiria revealed that NRC has procured and is assembling 15 wagons for livestock transport in Kajola, Oyo State, expected to be operational within two months.
Okhiria stressed that prioritizing people over profit in railway investments would indirectly yield economic benefits by improving the movement of goods and linking cities.
