Niger State Governor Umaru Bago has launched the sales and distribution of fertilizers and other agricultural inputs for the 2024 farming season at 50% subsidized rates.
Speaking at the event held at the farm center in Tunga, Minna, the governor emphasized his administration’s dedication to prioritizing agriculture, investing in machinery and technology to boost productivity in line with the ambitious New Niger Agenda. Bago highlighted the administration’s commitment to achieving sustainable food security, reducing food costs, and addressing unemployment.
The Governor assured farmers of the government’s support for the 2024 farming season and beyond, particularly through the 50% subsidy on fertilizer prices.
State Commissioner for Agriculture Musa Salihu Bawa Bosso stated that the ministry is working with Niger Food to implement the directive of cultivating 10,000 hectares of land in each of the state’s 25 local government areas. The Niger State Agricultural and Mechanization Development Authority (NAMDA) is also collaborating with Niger Food to meet the needs of 20,000 smallholder farmers and 10,000 medium-scale farmers, providing access to 1,000 power tillers and other agricultural inputs.
Bawa Bosso urged the governor to support the revival of the state’s buffer stock program, which has been inactive for several years, to enable the purchase and storage of food for sale at subsidized rates when necessary.
