The Executive Adviser to the Governor of Oyo State on Agribusiness, Dr. Debo Akande, emphasized the importance of inclusive partnerships and collaborations in agricultural development. Representing Governor Seyi Makinde, Dr. Akande made these remarks during the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) Golden Jubilee Anniversary celebration, coinciding with National Pasture Planting Day in Nigeria.
Dr. Akande, who also serves as the Director-General of the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency, highlighted the successful public-private synergy model adopted by the state. He underscored the vital roles played by development partners like the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and ILRI, citing the establishment of the Fasola Agribusiness Industrial Hub as a key achievement.
Oyo State leverages its agricultural comparative advantage under Governor Makinde’s leadership, emphasizing collaborative efforts with stakeholders. Dr. Akande expressed optimism about the continuous strengthening of partnerships, anticipating significant livestock development outcomes from these collaborative projects.
The ILRI event also featured the launch of Ibadan’s Forage Genetic Resources Plot, showcasing over 80 cultivars and accessions of improved tropical forage for livestock in Nigeria and West Africa.
Mrs. Akeredolu Olayinka Abimbola, representing the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, reiterated the ministry’s commitment to enhancing livestock quality and quantity by at least 60%. She commended initiatives like developing grazing reserves, training farmers in artificial insemination, and adopting a global action plan for animal genetic resources.
Participants at the event called for increased technical support, institutional and private sector involvement, lucrative pasture production, enhanced training opportunities for livestock farmers and herders, improved extension services, and robust research to drive sectoral growth and success.
