The distribution of agricultural inputs to 1,000 farmers in Lagos and Nasarawa states was announced by the Federal Government on Friday, aiming to enhance food production in both regions. This initiative aligns with ongoing endeavors to ensure an adequate supply of staple foods for Nigerians, supporting farmers nationwide to optimize crop cultivation for increased yields and output.
The National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA), a Federal Government agency, facilitated the distribution of the farm inputs. Accredited beneficiaries of the empowerment program received NALDA-branded bags containing maize and bean seeds, herbicides, fungicides, pesticides, and fertilizers.
According to NALDA, each package, when properly planted and maintained until harvest, has the potential to yield up to six tonnes of produce per farmer. The distribution prioritized each state’s agricultural specialization, and the biometrics of beneficiaries were captured on their farms to establish a comprehensive database and ensure that only legitimate farmers benefit.
In Lagos State, 500 beneficiaries from Lagos East Senatorial District, including Epe, Ibeju/Lekki, Ikorodu, Agbowa, Imota, and other areas, received the empowerment package. The Executive Secretary of NALDA, Paul Ikone, represented by the agency’s Information, Communications, and Technology Director, Mr. Chima Onuha, emphasized that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s agenda for agricultural development and food security.
One beneficiary, Owolabi Odulaja, expressed gratitude to NALDA for the support, highlighting its potential to alleviate poverty during challenging economic times.
In Nasarawa State, 500 farmers from across the state benefited from the distribution exercise, which took place at the Emir’s palace in Lafia, the state capital. The Emir of Lafia and Chairman of Nasarawa Council of Chiefs, Justice Sidi Muhammed (Rtd), commended the Federal Government for the initiative, emphasizing its positive impact on the state’s economy. He urged beneficiaries to make the most of the opportunity provided by the government to enhance agricultural productivity.
