Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has initiated the distribution of 1,200 tonnes of maize palliatives and commodities to farmers in the state to tackle the rising food prices nationwide. According to BusinessDay, the Federal Government provided 40 trailers of grains, which have been allocated to poultry, piggery, and fishery farmers across the 18 local government areas of the state.
Addressing the gathering in Akure on Monday, Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasized the significance of implementing measures to combat the increasing food prices across the country.
Governor Aiyedatiwa remarked, “Today’s program marks the commencement of various activities and initiatives aimed at making our state intolerant to food insecurity, alongside implementing extensive modern agricultural interventions that will elevate us to a commendable position among other states.”
He further acknowledged the challenges posed by the recent subsidy removal on petrol, stating, “The effects of the necessary yet painful subsidy removal have exacerbated the food security situation in Ondo State and Nigeria at large. The escalating inflation rates on food items and other essentials have significantly burdened the populace.”
“As an administration, it is imperative that we address this concerning trend and ensure that food remains not only accessible but also affordable to all members of the society.”
The Governor highlighted infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing market accessibility through rural road improvements and initiatives empowering smallholder farmers, with a special focus on women and youths. These efforts include training, capacity building, and facilitating access to credit.
Aiyedatiwa commended the significant contribution of agriculture to the state’s economy, underscoring Ondo State’s role in supplying 75 percent of tomatoes to markets in Lagos State.
He announced the distribution of 40 trailers of maize to poultry, fish, and piggery farmers, with plans for future distributions of various food commodities.
Furthermore, the Governor expressed gratitude for the support of the Federal Government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in approving the distribution of grains and other commodities nationwide.
Rotimi Wemimo Akinsola, Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture and Food Security in the state, praised the governor for instituting the committee, which serves as a testament to the governor’s dedication to the well-being of the populace.
