The Kano State Government has launched a comprehensive agricultural intervention to restore its status as a leading agricultural hub.
The state government also announced that the federal government has provided MPK and Urea fertilizers, which will be distributed to farmers through a committee comprising traditional and religious institutions, police, and other stakeholders.
Commissioner for Agriculture Dr. Danjuma Mahmoud disclosed this on Tuesday during an interview with the press in Kano. He stated that the government has spent N1.2 billion on 52 trucks of fertilizer and N5 billion on 180 trucks, with the state-owned KASCO set to produce 200,000 trucks of fertilizer by the end of the season.
Dr. Mahmoud added that the state government is revitalizing 20 abandoned dams, including the Kafinchiri dam, and clearing 1,299 hectares of irrigation farming land in Dansoshiya Village.
He further mentioned that the government has distributed 52 trucks of fertilizer to farmers in the 44 local government areas for free and purchased an additional 180 trucks from KASCO to be sold at subsidized rates. Additionally, the government is training 440 extension workers, who have been dispatched to local governments to educate farmers on new improved seeds and farming implements.
Dr. Mahmoud assured that the government’s efforts are aimed at achieving bumper harvests, curbing hunger and starvation, and reclaiming Kano’s former agricultural prominence.
