The Niger State Government has received a new shipment of 200 tractors from John Deere to bolster its preparations for dry-season farming. This addition will increase the state’s farming capacity from 250,000 hectares cultivated during the rainy season.
Hybrid seeds designated for the dry season have been procured by Niger Foods, as evidenced in accompanying photographs. Bayer AG, a prominent German company specializing in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and agriculture, will also supply additional seeds under an MOU signed during the World Bank/IMF Spring Meetings in Washington, USA earlier this year.
The state government plans to cultivate rice, maize, millet, sorghum, and beans during the dry season, aiming for a total production of one million tonnes across these grains. Governor Umar Bago previously finalized a $650 million agreement with John Deere to support the state’s agricultural revolution. This partnership includes the acquisition of 500 large-capacity tractors, 500 harvesters, and 1,000 various agricultural and irrigation tools and equipment, further facilitating the establishment of farm estates across millions of hectares in the state.
