As part of the presidential food relief initiative to alleviate hunger, the Rivers State government has received 21,650 bags of grains from the federal government to address the economic hardship faced by many families across Nigeria.
The delivery, comprising 3,680 bags of garri and 17,970 bags of corn, was received by Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara in Port Harcourt on Thursday. Governor Fubara, represented by Secretary to the State Government Dr. Tammy Danagogo, thanked President Bola Tinubu for the assistance, noting that it will significantly help in combating poverty and hunger, especially in rural areas.
Danagogo stated that local organizing committees, led by the caretakers of the 23 local government areas, have been established to distribute the food items to the most vulnerable populations throughout the state.
“This is a very welcome development,” Danagogo said. “It underscores the need for all levels of government to contribute to the fight against hunger. Rivers State is committed to this cause through efforts in security, agriculture, and direct palliative interventions. This federal support complements our ongoing initiatives.”
He reaffirmed the state government’s support for President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing that addressing insecurity is crucial for resolving food challenges. The state government is dedicated to ensuring peace and enabling farmers and fishermen to work effectively.
Danagogo also requested that future federal interventions consider the specific needs of the South-South region, such as garri, rice, or beans.
South-South Zonal Director of NEMA, Mr. Walson Brandan, noted that the food items, sourced from the National Strategic Reserve and approved by the President, will be evenly distributed across all LGAs in Rivers State. He commended the state’s commitment to effective distribution and urged continued collaboration with NEMA.
