Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has issued a stern warning to state officials against the diversion of fertilizer distributed to 52,800 farmers across the 44 Local Government Areas.
The Governor emphasized that any official caught diverting fertilizer would face severe consequences. “We will not tolerate corruption. This gesture is meant for real farmers,” he declared during the flag-off of the distribution of free fertilizer to farmers at the Open Arena, Government House, Kano.
Governor Yusuf tasked the Kano Project Protection Association (Kano-PRO-PA) with ensuring adherence to the distribution guidelines intended for smallholder farmers.
Earlier, the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, stressed the importance of fairness in the distribution exercise to achieve its goals. He noted that reports from District Heads indicated that high fertilizer prices were impeding farming during the 2024 rainy season, potentially leading to food shortages. Ensuring that fertilizer reaches the intended beneficiaries and providing necessary farm inputs will significantly aid in achieving a bumper harvest.
In a statement signed by Alhaji Sanusi Bature, the Director General of Communication and Governor’s Spokesperson, the Governor urged farmers to use the resources judiciously. Emir Sanusi also called on well-off individuals, philanthropists, and capable members of society to support farmers and assist the needy during these challenging times.
He praised the Kano State Government under Governor Yusuf’s leadership for initiating projects aimed at improving the standard of living for Kano’s populace. Emir Sanusi II prayed for peace, unity, stability, prosperity, and economic development in the state and beyond.
