Sanne Chipeta, the Sector Counsellor of Food and Agriculture at the Royal Danish Consulate General in Lagos, and Snorri Sigurdsson, a Danish investor, have highlighted critical factors necessary to engage young people in agriculture in Nigeria. During their visit to the IITA Youth in Agribusiness Office in Ibadan, they stressed the importance of access to land, education, and finance for youth success in agriculture.
Chipeta emphasized addressing literacy and land access issues to promote efficiency and sustainability, noting the need to change perceptions about young people in agriculture and address the challenges of land rights and literacy. She called for comprehensive institutionalization of education rather than sporadic projects.
Sigurdsson stressed the need to incentivize young people to embrace agriculture, comparable to opportunities in IT and other sectors. He advocated for a cooperative model like that in Sweden to help stabilize prices and enhance farmers’ control over their produce. Both expressed readiness to collaborate with the Youth in Agribusiness Office.
