In the aftermath of the National Labour Congress (NLC) strike resolution, pockets of darkness have engulfed several areas within Ikorodu and Ijede, as the tussle between indigenous residents and the management of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) EGBIN undertaking resurfaces.
Since the conclusion of the strike, neighborhoods including Mowonla, Gberigbe, Ijede, and various undisclosed locales have found themselves shrouded in complete darkness, grappling with the absence of electricity. The root cause of this abrupt power outage traces back to a longstanding dispute between Ijede locals and PHCN management, stemming from unresolved agreements dating back to the Military era.
The friction between the Ijede community and PHCN management revolves around land acquisition for operational purposes during the Military era. Allegations of inadequate compensation and unfulfilled agreements have fueled tensions, resulting in the current impasse that has left residents in the dark.
Efforts to resolve the standoff and restore electricity to the affected areas have been hampered by the complexity of the underlying issues and the absence of a mutually acceptable resolution. With no immediate end in sight to the deadlock, residents are left grappling with the challenges of daily life without access to essential power supply.
As the standoff persists, residents are voicing their frustration and calling for swift intervention to address the root causes of the dispute and restore electricity to their communities. The darkness that has descended upon these neighborhoods serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for dialogue and cooperation to ensure the uninterrupted provision of essential services to all citizens.
