Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, emphasized the need for more specialized agricultural institutions in the country. He highlighted that such institutions are essential for advancing the federal government’s goals of food security, mechanized farming, and economic diversification.
Speaking through his Deputy, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, at a public hearing in Abuja on June 7, Speaker Abbas addressed the House regarding nine agriculture-related bills. Three of these bills propose amendments to the Federal Universities of Agriculture Act 2010 to establish new universities in Oyo, Delta, and Enugu States. The remaining six bills aim to amend the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria Act 2004 to establish Agricultural Colleges and Institutes in Ekiti, Bauchi, Enugu, Delta, Nasarawa, and Ogun States.
“To fast-track the Federal Government’s drive for food security, modern and mechanized farming, and economic diversification, the need for more specialized agricultural institutions that are innovative and research-based has become imperative,” Abbas stated. He explained that the inclusion of agricultural reforms in the 10th House’s Legislative Agenda aims to address the high cost of food items. He expressed confidence that, with thorough and informed input from stakeholders, the bills would enhance the nation’s pursuit of food sufficiency and socio-economic development.
He encouraged stakeholders to provide meaningful contributions to help the House make informed decisions on the bills. “Public hearings are a key legislative process designed to ensure that the sentiments and aspirations of critical stakeholders and the public are reflected in the laws made by the legislature. This process also equips the parliament to create better-quality laws,” Abbas said. He urged stakeholders to ensure their contributions are profound and relevant to guide the House in administering effective legislative actions.
“Given the scope and significance of the nine agriculture-related bills under review, today’s public hearing is particularly extensive. Your commitment is crucial to making this event a success,” Speaker Abbas concluded.
