The National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI) in Umudike, Abia State, marked World Environment Day by addressing climate change challenges and unveiling an agroforestry regenerating plant.
Highlighting the importance of environmental protection, NRCRI Executive Director Professor Chiedozie Egesi emphasized the need for renewed commitment during the 2024 World Environment Day event in Umudike.
Established by the United Nations in 1974, World Environment Day is more than a celebration; it’s a call to action for raising awareness and addressing environmental issues, Egesi noted.
Keynote speaker Sam Onuigbo, Chairman of the South East Committee on Security, Climate Change, and Special Interventions of the North East Development Commission, called for policy changes at both local and international levels. He underscored the crucial role of clean energy in reducing emissions and providing power to underserved communities, linking clean energy to socio-economic development and environmental sustainability in tackling poverty, illiteracy, and health challenges.
Speakers at the event reiterated the importance of addressing climate change, deforestation, pollution, and biodiversity loss to ensure a healthy environment for future generations.
Secondary school students shared their optimistic views, highlighting the potential for a great future through environmental protection. They emphasized that World Environment Day is an opportunity to learn about effective resource management and environmental stewardship.
The event stressed the need for strong legislation and international cooperation to achieve environmental health and sustainability.
