Food Prices Soar: Rice, Garri, and Tomatoes See Highest Yearly Increase
According to the Selected Food Price Report, the average prices of essential food items have seen a significant surge, with rice, garri, and tomatoes experiencing the highest yearly increase.
Key Highlights:
Average price of rice rose by 156% to N1,399 in 2024 from N547 in 2023
Average price of garri increased by 135% from N363 in 2023 to N852 in 2024
Average price of tomatoes rose by 132% from N485 in 2023 to N1,123 in 2024
Food inflation accelerated to 40.5% in April
Prices of other food items like onion, beans, bread, and beef also saw significant increases
State and Zone Analysis:
Niger recorded the highest price of local parboiled rice at N1,785, while Benue recorded the lowest at N994
South-West and South-South zones saw the highest average prices of rice and garri, while North-West recorded the lowest
This significant increase in food prices will likely have a substantial impact on households, particularly low and middle-income families, who already struggle to make ends meet.
