The Kwara State Government has begun distributing 17,578 50kg bags of maize, sorghum, and millet received from the Federal Government to support vulnerable citizens amid the challenges from fuel subsidy removal.
Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Community Development, announced that these food items are being distributed among the less privileged in the state’s 16 local government areas. He stated that the distribution follows a template provided by the Federal Government, with his office overseeing to ensure proper allocation.
According to Olohungbebe, each local government has a committee overseeing the distribution. This committee includes the Directors of Personnel Management (DPMs), traditional rulers, representatives of the DSS, ICPC, civil society organizations, the National Youth Council of Nigeria, women groups, and development officers. These members ensure the items reach the intended beneficiaries.
The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) is handling the distribution directly. The allocation includes 2,216 bags of millet, 7,042 bags of maize, and 8,320 bags of sorghum, totaling 17,578 50kg bags across the 16 local governments.
Magaji outlined the distribution schedule: Baruten, Kaiama, Asa, Ilorin East, Ifelodun, and Oke-Ero on June 1; Patigi, Edu, Oyun, Offa, Ilorin South, and Moro on June 2; and Irepodun, Ilorin West, Isin, and Ekiti subsequently. He praised the process as smooth and without conflict, thanking the state government and stakeholders for their support in identifying the target beneficiaries.
Ayantola Kunle Mukaila, Director of Personnel Management for Ekiti LG, reported transparent and orderly distribution, with representatives from each political ward ensuring delivery to their communities. Comrade Saaduku Abdullahi from Irepodun LG also praised the program’s management and thanked the Federal and State governments, especially Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, for the palliatives and the effective handling of the exercise.
