The Organised Labour, comprised of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), is poised to convene an extraordinary joint session of the National Executive Council (NEC) today, as confirmed by a source within the leadership of both Labour Centres on Tuesday morning. The outcome of this significant gathering, it has been revealed, will decisively shape the trajectory of the ongoing strike action orchestrated by the organised Labour, which commenced on Monday, June 2, 2024, with the primary objectives of advocating for a new minimum wage and protesting the surge in electricity tariffs. Following a marathon six-hour deliberation with the organised labour leadership in Abuja, the Federal Government conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to augmenting the proposed minimum wage to N60,000. It was mutually agreed that the President remains steadfast in ensuring the establishment of a National Minimum Wage surpassing N60,000, with the Tripartite Committee slated to convene daily over the ensuing week to culminate in a mutually acceptable National Minimum Wage agreement. Organised Labour has consented to convene its constituent bodies to deliberate upon this latest proposition. The resolutions were formally endorsed on behalf of the Federal Government by Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.
