Taraba Governor Vows to Directly Allocate Tractors to Farmers
Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has assured that newly acquired tractors will be allocated directly to farmers without diversion.
Governor Kefas reiterated this commitment during the unveiling of the initial 250 out of 850 tractors and farm implements purchased from the Czech Republic. He emphasized that these machines signify his dedication to positioning Taraba as a leading food production hub.
In his statement, Governor Kefas emphasized that Taraba State is poised to tackle hunger head-on, leveraging its expansive land and agricultural potential to become a national leader in food security.
Highlighting the critical role of farmers in addressing Nigeria’s food crisis, Governor Kefas stressed that the tractors represent more than just technological advancement; they symbolize a beacon of hope for the agricultural sector.
Professor Nick Namessan, the Commissioner of Agriculture, revealed that farmers would sign agreements upon receiving the tractors. These agreements would entail producing guarantors as sureties, with payment structured on a 40-60% ratio, with the government assuming the larger share of repayments.
By subsidizing the cost of tractors, the government aims to encourage more farmers to participate in the scheme. Professor Nick emphasized the government’s commitment to closely monitoring repayments and tractor maintenance.
Former Taraba State Governor, Rev. Jolly Nyame, praised Governor Kefas for revitalizing infrastructure, noting that projects initiated during his tenure had suffered neglect but were now restored under the current administration.
Representatives of the Czech Republic Ambassador to Nigeria expressed satisfaction with their business ties with Taraba State, while leaders of various farmer groups welcomed the tractors as a timely intervention amidst pressing agricultural needs.
The event, graced by top government officials and traditional leaders including the Aku Uka of Wukari and the Emir of Muri, underscored the significance of agricultural investment in addressing food scarcity.
