African nations are urged to collaborate in addressing challenges within the agricultural sector and tapping into its potential for the continent’s prosperity. Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, delivered this message at the launch of the Africa Chapter of the Incorporated Society of Planters (ISP) in Abuja over the weekend.
The establishment of the ISP aims to promote value addition in farming and advance the interests of planters, Kyari emphasized. He noted that this initiative signifies a significant milestone in agricultural development not only in Nigeria but across Africa, particularly in combatting food insecurity.
Kyari highlighted agriculture’s pivotal role in the economy, emphasizing its contribution to livelihoods, food security, and overall socio-economic development. He underscored the importance of sustainable agricultural practices in ensuring prosperity and the well-being of people.
In his keynote address, Richard-Mark Mbaram, Embed Advisor for Stakeholder Engagement & Partnerships at the African Development Bank (AfDB), commended the launch of the ISP Africa Chapter, aligning with the bank’s objectives. He emphasized the importance of collaboration among agricultural experts, policymakers, and stakeholders in promoting innovation and sustainable practices.
Mbaram outlined the AfDB’s commitment to modernizing agriculture through advanced techniques, improved access to resources, and investment in infrastructure. He stressed the significance of initiatives like the ISP Africa Chapter in enhancing food security, empowering smallholder farmers, and promoting sustainable development.
Furthermore, Mbaram emphasized the ISP’s role in mitigating climate change impacts and ensuring the long-term viability of Africa’s agricultural sector through sustainable plantation practices. He reiterated the AfDB’s dedication to supporting initiatives that drive economic transformation and foster inclusive growth across the continent.
