Growing worries and apprehensions are arising in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, regarding the potential influx of Thailand’s decade-old stored rice into the Nigerian and African markets. Thailand intends to sell the 150,000 sacks of rice, which have been warehoused for a decade, with expectations of generating between 200 to 400 million baht (US$ 5.4 and 10.8 million). This decision by the Thai government has faced heavy criticism from its citizens and food safety experts alike. Following the announcement, Nigerians have expressed their concerns on social media about the possible negative effects the rice could have on public health if it enters Africa and specifically Nigeria, where food safety and regulatory checks are not rigorously enforced.
