Lagos State Government to Introduce 50 Meat Vans and Last Mile Shops for Improved Meat Distribution and Preservation
The Lagos State Government is set to inaugurate 50 Meat Vans at Oko-Oba abattoir and launch the Lagos Last Mile Meat Shops. These initiatives aim to control and preserve meat, ensuring residents have access to wholesome meat while bringing the market closer to them. State Commissioner for Agriculture, Abisola Olusanya, shared this information during a ministerial press briefing.
The government remains committed to developing an organized food system and value chain in the state, working on the five-year Agricultural and Food Systems Roadmap (2021-2025) and the Food Security Systems Policy Document. The unveiling of the Lagos Last Mile Meat shops and the use of new vans will ensure meat availability, create market access, and curb the transportation of meat carcasses illegally across the state.
In the last year, the state has launched various social intervention programs, such as trader monies for market men and women, and embarked on agricultural business support initiatives while building farms across the state. The Lagos Agric Scholars’ program has also been implemented, supporting over 2,3986 farmers in rice, fish, and poultry sectors.
The state government has contributed N7 trillion to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the last five years, with the Lagos food market size reaching N9 billion daily and N5 trillion in annual transaction values. The Agriculture Sector continues to scale up food production activities in the state.
