In an effort to achieve the food security and sufficiency goals of the ARISE Agenda, Akwa Ibom State’s Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has announced that every first and third Friday of each month will be designated as work-free days. This initiative aims to give workers the opportunity to actively participate in farming activities. Governor Eno made this declaration during the 2024 May Day celebration held at the Uyo Township Stadium, Uyo, with the theme ‘People First.’
Since taking office, Eno’s administration has focused on prioritizing worker welfare, and he assured that this commitment will continue. Known for his compassionate nature, Eno mentioned that N16.1 billion has already been allocated for the payment of outstanding gratuity, and an additional N2 billion has been ordered to further reduce the remaining backlog for retired workers in the state. This brings the total amount paid by his administration to N18.1 billion.
The Governor expressed his gratitude to the organized labor for their good working relationship, stating that during his campaign, he pledged to strengthen the bond between them. He proudly confirmed that, after nearly a year in office, he has kept that promise and even surpassed their expectations.
The Governor has approved and granted refunds for the outstanding 7.5% contributory pension scheme, paid three months of promotions, released 2023 promotions, and authorized the conduct of service examinations. He has also invested in affordable housing units for workers in Ibiono Ibom Local Government and initiated the construction of the 3rd Ring Road to connect workers to Uyo. Land allocations have been approved for workers, and Permanent Secretaries have been appointed to replace those retiring.
The 13-month salary payment is ongoing, and health workers recruitment for primary health centers is underway. The Governor will implement the new minimum wage once the federal government provides more details. To encourage farming, he declared the first and last Friday of every month as ‘Farm Days,’ discouraging the use of these days for funerals and ensuring monitoring for active participation.
In appreciation of the Governor’s efforts, two vehicles were presented to the chairmen of NLC and TUC. The State Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Comrade Sunny James, praised Governor Eno for fulfilling his campaign promises to workers in less than a year, emphasizing that these actions are answers to the prayers of Akwa Ibom workers. The Trade Union Congress counterpart, Comrade Dominic Abang, also appreciated the Governor’s focus on the people of the state, aligning with the theme of the celebration.
In separate messages of solidarity, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Elder Udeme Otong, the State Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Ekaette Obot (represented by Hon. Justice Aniekan Akpan), the Head of Civil Service, Elder Effiong Essien, the Commissioner for Labour and Manpower Planning, Aniefiok Nkom, and the State controller, Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, expressed their congratulations to the workers on the successful completion of their 2024 celebration. They acknowledged the workers as crucial pillars in fostering social growth.
These dignitaries commended Governor Eno for his commitment to the well-being of Akwa Ibom workers and retirees, as demonstrated through initiatives such as the 13th month salary, palliative measures, and timely releases of funds for the settlement of gratuity arrears. They pledged their unwavering support to the Governor, promising to assist him in his endeavors to further enhance the lives of Akwa Ibom workers through the implementation of the ARISE Agenda.
