In the Northern Senatorial District of Cross River State, border communities residing in Obanliku and Obudu Local Government Areas have voiced their concerns regarding the ongoing influx of refugees from Cameroon and the persistent encroachment of their farmlands by individuals from Benue State. These issues were brought to light during a town hall meeting, which was attended by significant stakeholders, including distinguished paramount rulers, clan heads, village heads, youth groups, and leaders of security institutions within the district.
Amidst this situation, the Director-General of the Cross River State Border Commission (BORDERCOM), Onun Ngim Okpo, engaged with the concerned communities. This interaction took place as the state government diligently proceeds with the conduct of a comprehensive Baseline Survey/Needs Assessment for the betterment and understanding of the challenges faced by these border communities.
The stakeholders highlighted that the continuous encroachments into their farmlands have, on numerous occasions, escalated into potential communal conflicts with their neighboring communities. As a result, they urged the establishment of organized border patrol teams to effectively address and prevent such trespassing incidents.
In response, the Director-General of the Cross River State Border Commission (BORDERCOM), Onun Ngim Okpo, assured the communities of prompt government intervention. Demonstrating the people-centric leadership style of Senator Prince Bassey Otu, he emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and harmony among the communities. Furthermore, he encouraged the communities to actively participate in the ongoing Baseline Survey/Needs Assessment, as this would facilitate improved government service delivery tailored to their specific requirements and concerns.
