To address its security issues, the Benue State Government is preparing to introduce a 10,000-strong security team. This initiative aims to reinforce the existing efforts of other security agencies within the state.

During an extensive gathering of stakeholders in the All Progressives Congress (APC) held at the Government House, Makurdi, Governor Hyacinth Alia shared his administration’s plans to tackle the security challenges faced by Benue State. The launch of a 10,000-strong security outfit will aid in safeguarding Benue communities, enabling rural farmers to access their farmlands without fear. The governor has already initiated efforts to procure Hilux vans and motorcycles for the security personnel to patrol across the state.
He expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and existing security agencies for their unwavering support in maintaining the state’s and the nation’s security. The new security outfit, scheduled to be launched before the end of May, will be comprised of young Benue residents.
Governor Alia clarified that he called for the meeting after receiving approval from the Commissioner of Police, given the temporary ban on political gatherings in the state. The meeting provided him with an opportunity to brief APC members about the government’s strategies to address the security issues plaguing the state.
He revealed that certain adversaries of the state had attempted to invite unknown gunmen to disrupt the peace in Benue, but the government successfully repelled them and will continue to do so until they are completely eradicated, ensuring the safety of farmers and the preservation of food security.
The governor highlighted his administration’s significant achievements in infrastructure development, including the construction of rural and urban roads. He pledged to work diligently to improve Benue’s well-being.
In the health sector, his government has made considerable progress, such as hiring over 400 medical and non-medical personnel at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH). He intends to revamp both primary and secondary healthcare systems across the state and reopen the State’s School of Nursing, offering financial assistance to indigenous students.
Scholarships will be reintroduced for students, and vocational training programs will be encouraged for the youth, with a focus on science-related courses. The governor has awarded contracts for the construction of over 50 roads across the state, with a completion deadline of 12 months.
Governor Alia acknowledged that some individuals are unhappy with his administration’s progress and innovative approach, but he remains committed to doing what is right for the state’s benefit. He reiterated that the APC in Benue remains united under the leadership of Mr. Benjamin Omakolo.
The governor expressed gratitude to the Tor Tiv, HRM Orchivirigh Prof. James Ayatse, and the Tiv Traditional Council for their intervention in maintaining a harmonious relationship between him and Senator George Akume, a statesman. He warned those attempting to destabilize the state with divisive comments to stay away, as he will not allow anyone to undermine the government, even if they have served the state in the past.
Acting APC state chairman, Mr. Benjamin Omakolo, clarified that the governor had no involvement in the suspension of Mr. Austin Agada as the State Chairman of the party. During the event, various representatives from different zones and sectors lauded Governor Alia’s efforts in improving the state. The deputy governor, Mr. Sam Ode, assured the people of Benue South that the government has numerous plans for their region and urged their continued support for the administration.
