The Ogun State Government, under the guidance of its Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, has issued a comprehensive warning to the residents of floodplain areas, urging them to relocate to safer grounds prior to the commencement of the rainy season. This warning was given during the 2024 Ogun State Flood Alert, which was based on the forecasts provided by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA). According to these agencies, the rainy season is expected to start in March and continue through December 2024, with sixteen out of the twenty local government areas in the state anticipated to be affected by heavy rainfall. In light of this, residents in flood-prone areas are strongly advised to either relocate or elevate their homes to minimize the potential damage from the impending downpour. The commissioner highlighted that those living in hilly areas may experience erosion due to the rapid flow of water, while those residing in wetland regions are at risk of flooding.
In an effort to mitigate the effects of flooding, the Ogun State Government has implemented various measures, including the construction of drainage channels, mini-bridges, and culverts, as well as the desilting and clearing of rivers and streams. Farmers have been encouraged to start planting their crops, while fish farmers have been advised to harvest their stock before the peak of the rainy season in July. Poultry farmers have also been warned against overcrowding their livestock during this period. To ensure proper water passage, the government has called on residents to obtain a drainage permit before constructing their own drainage systems.
Furthermore, during his remarks, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority (OORBDA), Engr. Olufemi Odumosu, emphasized the importance of collaboration between OORBDA and the Ogun State government in the field of tourism. This partnership aims to generate additional revenue by promoting the region’s attractions and fostering sustainable growth.
