In an effort to align with the Federal Government’s rice production goals, Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has launched a substantial 50,000 hectare rice cultivation project. Financially backed by a N150 million monthly credit scheme dedicated to agricultural development under the administration, this initiative aims to boost the state’s agricultural sector. The project’s inauguration was recently held in Ndok Community, Ogoja Local Government Area of Cross River State, as reported by source.
Governor Otu reaffirmed his Administration’s steadfast commitment to transforming the agricultural sector through a close partnership with rice farmers. This collaboration will be instrumental in cultivating the extensive 50,000 hectares dedicated to rice production.
Governor Otu highlighted their approach, which involves collaborating with farmer groups to spearhead an agricultural revolution. Initially, they will focus on short-term cash crops like rice, cocoa, and cassava, with plans to eventually develop oil palm and rubber plantations. Recognizing the significance of food and energy security, he assured farmers of the government’s unwavering support. Emphasizing their long-term dedication, Governor Otu also extended this commitment to traditional leaders. The government remains committed to providing essential resources to farmers throughout this endeavor.
Governor Otu announced the establishment of a credit-guarantee scheme to facilitate financial aid for committed farmers. He highlighted the scheme’s independence from the government, as it receives a consistent N150 million allocation every month to support the initiative. Encouraging individuals to seize this opportunity, he underscored the importance of proactive involvement in agriculture to boost productivity.
Governor Otu emphasized the significance of taking proactive action instead of passively relying on sustenance, acknowledging the abundant resources bestowed upon the state by divine providence. He stressed the importance of industrious efforts. Prior to his remarks, Johnson Ebekpo, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Irrigation, elaborated on the government’s comprehensive strategy for advancing agricultural development.
The governor underscored the necessity of well-defined policies to entice private sector investments. He also highlighted Cross River’s dedication to establishing agriculture as the foundation of their economic growth.
Substantial investments have been allocated towards acquiring new tractors to boost mechanization efforts. These tractors will be distributed across the local government areas in Cross River State, with management entrusted to cooperatives consisting of both men and women. The objective of this initiative is to empower youths and assist small-holder farmers in enhancing their operations. In response, a rice-cluster farmer named Madam Agatha expressed her gratitude to Governor Otu for this initiative. She also pointed out the underutilization of the state’s rice mill due to productivity limitations and emphasized the potential for increased production with proper support.
Emmanuel Anoh, Chairman of the Rice Farmers Association in Cross River State, projected a minimum rice yield of 6 tonnes per hectare, which equates to 140 bags of 50kg rice per hectare. He emphasized that the substantial increase in production capacity has the potential to revolutionize the food industry in Nigeria. Anoh also commended the dedicated efforts of the Cross River State Government and expressed his confidence in the favorable outcomes that will benefit the general public from these commendable initiatives.
