Established in Lomé, Togo on September 27, 2013, the Regional Agency for Agriculture and Food (RAAF) celebrated its 10th anniversary. RAAF’s primary objective is to ensure the technical implementation of regional programs and investment plans that contribute to the execution of the West African Regional Agricultural Policy (ECOWAP). They rely on regional institutions, organizations, and skilled players to achieve this goal.
Over the past decade, RAAF has successfully coordinated and supervised the implementation of ECOWAP projects and programs, leading to notable achievements in agricultural development and food security across West Africa. By forming strategic partnerships with member states, technical institutions, and development partners, RAAF has facilitated knowledge sharing, resource allocation, and best practices adoption.
Despite these accomplishments, there are areas for improvement, such as human resource management, administrative efficiency, funding, and reduced dependence on donors. RAAF should also focus on enhancing communication about the outcomes and impacts of the projects they manage.
In the face of current agricultural challenges, RAAF plays a vital role in developing a more resilient agricultural sector capable of overcoming future obstacles. This involves strengthening partnerships with external donors and fostering closer collaboration with regional stakeholders. Learning from past experiences, successful collaborations, and a shared vision for a prosperous and food-secure West Africa will be crucial in bringing about significant change and lasting impacts for the populations benefiting from RAAF’s actions.
As security issues rise in the region, RAAF must reinforce its visibility and impact by examining the conditions for more effective integration of targeted agricultural policies to promote regional development.
