The Nigerian Baptist Convention (NBC) expresses its dedication to contributing to the nation’s food sufficiency and security.
It states that as part of this commitment, the church has ventured into farming to ensure food availability for the people.
President of NBC, Rev. Israel Akanji, conveyed this message on Monday while addressing journalists during the ongoing NBC 111 Annual Session at the Baptist International Convention Centre in Lufuwape, Ogun, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the convention, held from April 20 to April 25, commemorates the body’s 110 years in Nigeria, themed “Super Centenary Anniversary” and hosted by the Edo State Convention.
This event offers worshippers the chance to engage in worship, seek divine guidance, and connect with God.
Akanji, describing the church as congregationalist, mentioned that the church, aiming to address people’s needs, has acquired vast land in Dikko, Niger State; Osun, and other locations for agricultural purposes.
“We plan to train individuals in various farming techniques and provide land and other resources to ensure food sufficiency,” he said.
The decision was prompted by recent food shortages and the high cost of food items, which remain unresolved.
With the theme of the super centenary convention emphasizing “Entering into Newness through Discipleship and Apostleship,” NBC is exploring innovative ways to impact lives.
Akanji clarified that the farm project would operate on a self-sustaining basis, with the church offering guidance to ensure it remains focused on its objective of food provision.
He emphasized that despite engaging in various pro-life projects, the church remains committed to its primary goal of spreading the Good News for salvation.
The farm project, like other church intervention programs, is not profit-oriented but service-oriented.
NAN reports that the church, prioritizing evangelism for soul salvation, continues to provide essential social amenities such as schools, hospitals, scholarships, and more.
