The Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security in Ogun State, Bolu Owotomo, expressed the state’s dedication to assisting farmers through digital agriculture to enhance production. Owotomo made this announcement recently at an agricultural exhibition held to commemorate the 2024 Lisabi Festival in Abeokuta, organized by the Ministry of Agriculture. The event was themed “Encouraging Youth Entrepreneurship in Agribusiness: A Solution to Youth Unemployment in Egbaland.”
He mentioned that digital agriculture has the potential to transform the agricultural sector, alleviate constraints related to farming, and promote sustainability. Owotomo highlighted that this innovation would enhance the appeal of farming to youths, who are the most significant users of mobile phones and software applications in Africa.
He further emphasized that it would render food production more lucrative and less arduous. Additionally, it will establish efficient connections between markets and consumers.
Furthermore, he highlighted the state’s initiative to enhance financial inclusion and connections among young individuals involved in agriculture, emphasizing the importance of viewing farming as a business to enhance its value chain.
Representing Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, the Alake of Egbaland, Rasheed Raji, a Navy captain, urged youths and farmers to make efficient use of government interventions aimed at enhancing food production and security.
Ganiyat Adeoye-Kushimo, the chairperson of the Ogun chapter of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria, praised the state’s current administration for its assistance, urging parents to recognize farming as a lucrative investment and motivate their children to pursue it.
