The agreement between Edo State and the Italian government was formalized with the Veneto region of Italy on the sidelines of the 60th International Art Exhibition hosted by La Biennale di Venezia, where the governor served as the Commissioner of the Nigerian Pavilion. Governor Obaseki, during the signing ceremony, highlighted his government’s impact across various sectors of the economy. He affirmed the state’s commitment to exploring partnerships in culture, agriculture, technology, and technical and vocational education with the Italian Government, aiming to equip youths in the state with the necessary skills to compete effectively on a global scale.
The partnership aims to foster collaboration in technical and vocational training, create opportunities in the agricultural sector, bolster Information Technology capacity, promote tourism, expand economic prospects in the textile industry, and cultivate social and cultural ties between both nations.
Governor Obaseki remarked, “During my tenure as Governor of Edo State, which spans over seven and a half years, our collaboration with the Italian government has evolved significantly. This includes joint efforts in migration management, cultural initiatives, and international exchanges. Today, we are here to strengthen the collaborative bond between the people of Edo State and the Veneto region, focusing on culture, agriculture, technology, and technical and vocational education and training (TVET). These areas are central to our government’s agenda, and we have made substantial progress in strengthening institutions that champion these causes in Edo State over the past seven years.”
Highlighting his government’s achievements, Governor Obaseki noted, “In particular, our administration has implemented extensive reforms in the civil and public service, greatly improving service delivery and ensuring seamless government operations through digital technology. Edo State is now the first state in Nigeria to fully transition to digital operations, conducting all government business electronically. Additionally, we have spearheaded reforms in the arts, including the ongoing development of the Benin Cultural District and the construction of the Museum of West African Arts (MOWAA) in Benin City. These initiatives provide a platform for exploring our state’s rich cultural heritage and inspiring our youth to embrace creativity.”
In the agricultural sector, we boast the largest oil palm development project in Africa, with approximately 70,000 hectares of land under cultivation. Furthermore, investments in food processing have surged, with two active ethanol plants nearing completion. These advancements are attributed to efforts to attract investment to the state, resulting in its emergence as one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing economies.
Regarding vocational education, Governor Obaseki highlighted the state’s commitment to expanding vocational education institutions. These institutions aim to train top-tier technicians with support from international organizations. A model institute is already operational in Benin City, with additional institutes spread across the state, providing high-quality practical training to youth.
“We are ensuring that our people are well-equipped with skills so that they can contribute effectively wherever they go,” Governor Obaseki emphasized.
In addition, significant investment has been made in technology infrastructure, laying the groundwork for a digital economy. The installation of fiber optic internet cables across all 18 local government areas of the state has been completed, ensuring widespread access to high-speed internet.
Governor Obaseki noted, “It’s noteworthy that we have a significant number of our people here in Italy who continue to uphold the values of hard work, diligence, and excellence.”
The rich history and vibrant art scene of Veneto reflect the immense potential that Edo State embodies. Thus, we are actively fostering connections to exchange success stories and collaborate on establishing a mutually beneficial relationship for the betterment of our communities.
“We have embarked on a remarkable journey in recent years and are grateful to have had the people and government of Italy as invaluable partners,” Governor Obaseki remarked. “We deeply appreciate all your contributions and pledge that with the strengthened bond formed today, we will achieve even more in our efforts to cultivate a more impactful relationship for shared prosperity.”
