Former Oyo Commissioner for Works and Transport, Prof. Abdulraheem Afonja, has allocated over N5 million to empower farmers in Oriire Local Government Area by providing funds for yam seedlings. He emphasized that this initiative was aimed at bolstering the government’s endeavors towards ensuring food security.
During the presentation of the funds to the recipients, Afonja highlighted that this act was a testament to his ongoing commitment to aiding farmers with necessary resources, particularly as the rainy season begins, acknowledging the economic difficulties they face.
He expressed that the empowerment would not just supplement the endeavors of the Oyo State Government concerning food security but also boost agricultural productivity across Oriire Local Government Area and the broader Ogbomoso zone.
Afonja outlined that, concerning the welfare of the people of Oyo state, there are five fundamental priorities that any incoming government must prioritize.
He noted that these priorities encompass security, healthcare, education, economic development, and the social welfare of the elderly, children, and retirees.
He emphasized, “We must address each of these areas directly to uplift our people from poverty and foster prosperity. Without a secure state, fulfilling the other four fundamental needs becomes impossible. This inevitably leads to economic decline, discouraging investors from investing in our beloved state.”
“Being a farmer in Orire Local Government Area, I’ve engaged with numerous fellow farmers, and it’s evident they require assistance. Unfortunately, banks are reluctant to provide loans due to the lack of collateral, and even when available, the terms are exorbitant”. “I empathize with the struggles farmers and comprehend the challenges they encounter in securing funds to sustain their farming endeavors.”
“I also acknowledge the looming threat of losing everything to herders, especially after investing all their resources in the planting season.” There are numerous uncertainties that farmers confront daily. “Nonetheless, I have been actively assisting the local government area by improving infrastructure, such as grading rural roads, and enhancing security through collaborations with my security outfit, OPC, and Agro rangers.”
” Our partnership aims to safeguard the interests of farmers in Orire Local Government.”
“As a journalist, you can verify these efforts. I’ve always emphasized that government cannot tackle these challenges alone. That’s why I’ve previously undertaken projects like grading farm roads in Orire, and now I’m providing financial support for the upcoming planting season.”
Representing the other beneficiaries, Bamikole Ezekiel conveyed appreciation to Afonja, stating that the provision of yam seedlings will boost productivity in the upcoming planting season.
