To address food security concerns in Nigeria, MTN has announced its partnership with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) to disseminate weather and climate information to farmers and other users across the country.
This collaboration follows a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in February 2024 between NiMet and Tomorrow.io, a prominent weather intelligence company based in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, with operations across Africa and the Middle East. The partnership encompasses various areas such as commercializing weather data, enhancing the accuracy of weather and climate forecasts, and leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) in weather and climate intelligence.
Tobechukwu Okigbo, the Chief Corporate Services & Sustainability Officer of MTN Nigeria Communications Limited, expressed the company’s commitment to supporting national initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for Nigerians. He emphasized MTN’s readiness to assist NiMet’s collaboration with Tomorrow.io to provide this service to farmers nationwide. Okigbo highlighted the company’s dedication to enhancing the nation’s food security and anticipated a productive partnership.
Charles Anosike, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), emphasized NiMet’s role as the federal government agency responsible for observing, collecting, processing, and disseminating meteorological data and information. He underscored the importance of weather and climate data as essential planning tools for various sectors, including agriculture, aviation, marine, oil and gas, construction, and academia. Anosike expressed NiMet’s delight in partnering with MTN Nigeria to facilitate the distribution of weather and climate information to farmers, supporting the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
