President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to participate in the World Leaders’ Summit for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28).
COP 28, as outlined by the organizers, presents an opportunity to explore global solutions aimed at limiting the increase in global temperatures to 1.5 degrees. It also serves to inform countries’ preparations for revising and enhancing their Nationally Determined Contributions (national climate plans) by 2025, accelerate the ongoing green transition, and ultimately achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
This year’s summit is anticipated to address several contentious issues that are crucial for parties involved in addressing and mitigating climate crises globally.
“We are currently in a critical decade for climate action. According to the latest findings from the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, greenhouse gas emissions need to be reduced by 43 percent by 2030, compared to 2019 levels,” stated the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Other Nigerian representatives attending the summit include Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal; Special Adviser to the President of the National Economic Council on Climate Change, Rukaiya Bashir El-Rufai; and President of the Forums of Regions of Africa, Kayode Fayemi.
